Isle of Lewis Chess Set - Black

About The Set:

I am offering a brand new Isle of Lewis chess set based upon the originals which date back to medieval times. This is the most popular interpretation and is an excellent choice of the Lewis genre of chess set.

The Lewis Chessmen were discovered in 1831, on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland by a local shepherd. The chessmen discovered within the chamber are probably the most famous in gaming history and are the oldest complete set of chessmen ever found. Made from walrus tusk, the Lewis Chessmen are believed to be of Icelandic origin and to date back to the twelfth century.

Queen Me:

Unlike any other set available here, this set for comes with two extra queens for those of you who are lucky enough to get a pawn all the way down to the other end of the board and don't want to scrabble around looking for something to use as an extra queen.

The Set Itself:

The King proudly on his deeply carved throne with crown and sword in hand.
The Queen on her throne with her crown.
The Bishop on his throne with mitre, holding his staff.
The Knight astride his horse with shield, helmet and spear.
The Rook, a soldier holding his shield and sword.
The Pawns as richly carved obelisks.

Construction:

Each set is hand cast, painted, stained and lacquered to give a durable high quality result yet still retaining a certain ceramic and antique finish.

Colors available:

Unless you specify otherwise the colors for this set for are Unglazed Matt Black for the dark and antique stone for the light. If you would prefer any other colors then just let me know and I'll be more than happy to oblige.

The king is 3.5 inches in height and the set would suit a standard tournament board with squares about two inches or more.

Vinyl Chess Mat:

This set also comes with an optional vinyl chess mat/board so you can start playing as soon as you receive it. This is a black and white mat with 2 inch squares and is tough, durable and wipe clean.

Packaging:

Each piece is individually wrapped in bubble wrap and then the whole set. This is then packed in a sturdy cardboard box into which is packed polystyrene peanuts for extra padding. Sets are usually dispatched the next working day, unless you specify an unusual color in which case you might, but not always, have to wait an extra day.
